Mtanios Naassy - Harf Zaed

Bazbina, Akkar.  16 April, 2007.

During my stay in Bazbina during the Easter holiday in April 2007, I met a lot of our friends and relatives who converge to the village to spend the spring holidays. It was a great time of the year: coming together in such a beautiful spring setting with flowers blooming and greenery everywhere. The snow is glittering from atop the fields of Ain El Sukkar, a clear sky filtering the golden sun rays and a chilling fresh air. What a change from the depressing city environment.

It was then I met Mtanios Naasy and his family who came, as usual, from Beirut to Bazbina to spend few days in their village with the family. Mtanios presented me with a copy of his newly signed book under the title "Harf Zaed".

I have posted below Mtanious' pictures with friends and family. They were taken at the Press Club of Lebanon in Beirut during the book signing ceremony. Also, I have posted the first two chapters of the mentioned book together with their English translation.

A LETTER TOO MANY?

By Mtanious Naassy

Chapter I

They rested on a soft sofa, with his arm wrapping her ivory neck with affection, and his hand caressing the locks of her silky black hair streaming off her left breast.

-   Do you still love me?

-   More than ever.

-   After all these years?

-   After…all…these…years… YES, Fadi replied confidently.

-   How come?!

-   What is built on rock is rock-solid. It resists all storms and disasters, turning Time into its guardian and Life into its servant.

-   You think so?

-   Yes… our relation was erected by reason with the bricks of logic, on the rocks of love.

-   Your talk is romantic and smooth, as usual, witty boy!

-   Me… witty?!

-   Pro…, Lina said laughing.

-   Waw! That much?

-   Sure! Why not? and my love for you grows by the day and by the hour in my senses like a fruit tree on a fertile soil? I met you eight years ago and my feelings don’t know marking time or regression! So are you not witty for achieving this?

-   No, no, no, I’m only charming.

-   Humble! Definitely humble!

While she said that, she pinched him in his tummy, so he quivered in pain and screamed with laughter, trying to prevent her from doing it again, and saying:

-   I cannot always be humble in front of you!

-   How come? Explain it to me my dear philosopher.

-   To maintain the balance between us!

-   Which balance, my little fox?

-   The balance powers!

-   Powers?

-   Charm powers…

-   Clown!

-   I am no clown. In presence of a charming lady like you, a guy has to shed the light on his own virtues, even if he may seem a little bold… merely to maintain the balance…

-   Witty and clown.

-   Great, if we go on like that, we will end up with a never-ending list of undignifiying adjectives.

-   I do not mind.

She said that while she tried to pinch him again in his stomach, but his hand prevented her from doing so. Then her right hand took him by surprise, pinching him quickly in his left thigh, giving rise to a loud scream that broke through the walls, followed by giggles that enraptured the furniture and were echoed by the dumb walls. Then Lina said on a serious tone this time:

-   Fadi, I feel I am ready to have children!

-   Whh…what?! Do you mean it, honey?

-   And to dedicate myself to raising a child also!

-   I can’t believe what I just heard!

-   Believe it!

-   But, until the near past, you were drifting and postponing, avoiding every attempt on my behalf in this respect…

Didn’t you use to say: “I don’t want to share my heart between two loves”? “I do not want to take care of my child at the expense of my husband”? And “I will not have a child before I finish raising my elder boy, and before I make sure of the stability of his feelings”? And that “we should enjoy our freedom as long as possible, before we become in charge of a child we bring into this world”?

-   Yes I did. But now that we have been married almost two years, I think it is time to discuss the issue seriously, especially after our last conversation about the unhappy surprises that life keeps in its pack most of the time, God spare us its evil.

-   Darling, this is the nicest thing I’ve heard in a while.

He said that and drew some warm kisses on her head which was still lying on his chest, as he commented:

-   Does that mean that we should get up now and go to bed to start trying?

-   Witty, clown and stupid also?  She said so in laughter.

-   What now?

-   Don’t you know how to count?

-   Uff! Yes, it won’t work today, will it?

-   No it won’t, I regret to tell you that you will have to wait a few more days before you start your attempts to see how “productive” you are.

They laughed together again, then Fadi remarked hypocritically:

-   Still, we can rehearse since you have not yet entered that “difficult” period.

-   Possible.

He started sipping from her lips as much exquisite wine as he could, while taking off her light clothes, uncovering all the beauty hiding under them, a beauty beyond all words and descriptions. The angels were standing around them, dancing and cheering the couple, encouraging them to take out as much pleasure as they could.

After one hour, during which ecstasy extinguished the flames of desire that burned them out more than once, Lina said while catching up her breast:

-   That was magnificent!

-   Indeed!

-   I suppose this exercise would efficient if we repeated it a few more times in the coming days, don’t you think?

-   No doubt about that…. NO doubt about that at all because; the good practice contributes to a better quality of procreation.

They laughed a good deal at the silliness of the last idea until their mouths were shut but a warm kiss they exchanged to express their mutual gratitude for those beautiful intimate moments they spent together. Then Fadi said:

-   Sweetheart, tomorrow we are invited to dinner at the Madi family, aren’t we?

-   Of course!

-   And what will you wear for the occasion?

-   I will put on a long red gown that glitters like your beautiful eyes.

-   Then God help those who will lay eyes upon you tomorrow.

-   Aha?

-   Added beauty! Added magic! Added elegance! This is way beyond anybody’s ability to bear, be they women or men! Believe me, sometimes while watching people looking at you with envy and desire, I feel disgusted and proud in the same time. How about that?!

-   Mmmmmmmm, after a long analysis, my diagnosis for your disease suggests that you suffer from “jealousy”, “envy” and “selfishness”, all of which desperate incurable cases.

-   Thanks. I am reassured now, you competent shrink! My advice to you: stick to painting, it’s your specialty. And don’t you step on other people’s fields.

-   Didn’t you like my diagnosis, my love? Or have you sensed in it a reality you’d rather ignore?

-   Neither nor. Just stick to painting and stay away from medicine, ok?

-   Ok, victim of my beauty.

-   Pretentious!

-   Quite rightly!

-   No doubt about that. We will go out to dinner tomorrow in the red Ferrari?

-   Yes. Fadi, do you remember that we are also invited to another dinner in two days?

-   Which dinner?

-   The Association’s dinner for 1990. Have you forgotten?

-   Yeah right.

-   We will attend it, won’t we?

-   Of course. I cannot miss such an occasion, you know.

-   Certainly. It’s a charity banquet. I will put on for that occasion a…… mmmmm white dress. What do you think?

-   Great. Then God help those who will have the honor of having you among them.

-   Cut the crap and let’s go to bed.

-   Do you promise that we start perseverant trials to have a baby after having waited so long?

-   God willing.

-   God, I am very happy with your decision.

-   Me too. Good night, my love.

-   Good night, sweetheart.

-   They closed their eyes after a long last kiss, and surrendered to Morpheus.

It was past five P.M., hour in which he usually leaves his office. But he was still welcoming his guests and bidding them farewell relentlessly and without complaint. The telephone rang; he lifted the handset and said:

-   Hello.

-   Darling, you are late! It’s past 6.30 in the evening!

-   Sorry, sorry sweetie, I got hooked in the work. I will leave right away and get to you in 30 minutes.

-   Well Fadi, but please drive carefully.

-   And so I will. See you.

He headed home and got there as soon he promised his wife. After he took his shower and changed quickly, they rode in the red Ferrari and took off.

Lina was shining bright that evening with her red dress like ruby. Fadi fascinated the audience by her side with his tall stature, his good looks and his eloquent conversation. The dinner was a great occasion where they were treated with welcome and care. Rather they were the centre of interest and admiration of all the guests, as they left the sweetest effect on their hearts by their God-gifted good deeds, beauty, money and prestige.

They came back home and made love while laughing at the idea of useful practice for pregnancy. Then they slept like a log.

In the afternoon of the next day, Fadi was getting ready to leave his office where he had a pretty hectic day. Then the telephone rang.

He lifted the handset and said:

-   Hello.

And there was Lina’s voice asking him in utmost sweetness:

-   Fadi, my love, will you be late today too?

-   I was at the point of leaving. I wouldn’t keep such a beautiful lady waiting alone and drown myself in silly tasks and occupations as I did yesterday.

-   Mmmmmm…. You are right. Because he who does so is most certainly an idiot, isn’t he?

-   Of course, of course, he confirmed laughing.

-   Well, I will be waiting for you.

-   I am only road-distance away from your arms, oops! from the house, God willing. We will have plenty of time to take a cup of coffee together before we go out to dinner, OK?

-   OK…

-   By the way sweetie, as long as you will be wearing white, will you please ask Abou Samir to prepare the white coupé Mercedes? What do you say?

-   Who says I will wear a white gown?

-   You did, the night before last night, after the rehearsal, have you forgotten?!

-   Oh my God, that’s true. It completely skipped my mind.

-   Unfortunately, early senility, he said jokingly.

-   What have you said, witty boy?

-   Nothing, nothing. I jut said that it may be early senility.

-   Well I will teach you a lesson as soon as you get here.

-   I long for that my dear. I can’t wait to undergo the sweet torture in your arms, he said sarcastically.

-   Good “compliment” salesman.

-   Me? compliment salesman?

-   Well-experienced, I would say.

-   God forgive you! I think that the procreation exercises we are doing are affecting your memory, and making you forget some things.

-   Come on, stop the gossip, hang up and take off. But drive carefully, do you hear me?

-   I will. Don’t forget Abou Samir. You have to explain to him clearly that tonight we need the white… coupé… Mercedes… and nothing else. He’s getting old and he cannot tell the difference between a beast and a vehicle. He refuses to retire and rest for fear of leaving me alone. According to him, he never left me since I came into the world, and he will not do so as long as he still has a little breath in his chest and a little strength in his body. The strangest thing is that he would not accept an assistant because, to him, that would be a useless waste of money. And I do not want to hurt him, so please, make sure, in your own way, that he understands which car we are talking about; otherwise, you will find another car waiting for us.

-   Fine, see you.

-   See you sweetheart.

He hung up, held his briefcase and was about to leave his office when his secretary stopped him and said:

-   Mr. Fadi, I have a request, if I may.

-   Go ahead.

-   My mother is sick and I have to accompany her to hospital the day after tomorrow, is that possible?

-   Of course, but what’s wrong with her?

-   We don’t know yet, she has been having stomach pain since a couple of days. This is why the doctor required some tests.

-   Let Abir replace you the day after tomorrow. I wish a quick recovery to your mother. Please give her my best, don’t forget.

-   I will, I will. Thank you sir, thank you.

-   You’re welcome Mona. See you.

-   See you, she said before mumbling:

-   God! How charming and attractive this man is. How fortunate is his wife to have him. God, please, put a guy like him on my way, to love and marry me. Bestow on me a spouse who, with his love, would take me out of my humdrum life, and with his money would rescue me from my misery.

This was Mona’s wish while she was bidding farewell to the man she considered to be the most handsome of all men, and the centre of attraction among all of them. Then he disappeared behind the door.

Fadi got in his BMW, and took off, while he could hear the best wishes of health and long life from Abdo, the poor guy who waits for him daily in the garage in quest of a little financial help.

Chapter II

He turned right, leaving behind the highway, and started going up the mountain’s winding and narrow roads, full of dangerous curves.

It was rainy, the roads were slippery, and the long winter night had spread its darkness everywhere. Fadi was driving all those distances that night towards his villa resting solemnly and majestically on one of the summits, one among many others which occupy the summits of that high mountain.

The truck was going down the mountain towards the coast. Its speed had become out of control, and its drunk driver was fidgeting and wriggling in his seat behind the steering wheel, wiggling and dancing with the music that was loudly coming out of the radio. His concentration was weak and his thinking numb under the effect of the alcohol. His hand was holding on the Scotch bottleneck. He had already emptied half of it was already in his stomach.

On his part, Fadi was closing up on the same curve, driving with balance and awareness, as his wife had recommended over the phone in their last conversation.

Fate was standing there somewhere, measuring the distance between the two vehicles by meters, by seconds; studying the wind speed, the rain density, the road width, the visibility average, the efficiency of the vehicles’ headlights, wheels and brakes. It was studying everything and interfering in everything, even in the type of music that enraptured the lightheaded driver.

Fate planned it all and exerted too much effort to guarantee the suitable circumstances and perfect timing for the accident.

Wasn’t it enough for the Providence to interfere through the past times and years, to prevent the occurrence of the inevitable for reasons fate could never understand, and a wisdom it could never realize?

Yes, those interventions were enough. It would not allow the surprises to hinder its mission, once all the elements for a perfect accident gathered.

Therefore, it stood by that curve, anxious, waiting impatiently that crucial moment, while counting down:

“Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one…. Perfect! A most horrible accident!”

After having hit the car and crashed with its front left wheel the hood and front left corner of the roof, the truck fell over its right side, closing by the side fence on the road, breaking through it, and falling off to the deep valley, carrying away with it the drunk driver to the beyond, with the bottle of “scotch” in his hand.

The car of Fadi remained crushed by the right side of the road, and he was in it, facing the same fate as his vehicle which looked like a gum that has just been spit after long chewing.

How absurd and insolent was that mad fate which was in charge of executing the “written and preset” in such an exaggerated manner most of the times.

It was the soldier who, upon his superiors’ orders, occupies a piece of enemy land, and mistreats its unarmed citizens without adding anything to his victory but the oppression, darkness and evil that he sowed in it.

It was the hangman who, in the sake of executing the order of whipping somebody, does not spare any strength in his arm, leaving on the body of the convict the deepest bleeding marks, the widest bloody scars, to satiate his thirst for blood, to satisfy his ears’ longing for screams of pain, in the pretext that he is only executing orders.

It is a hit man executing the death penalty to an innocent soul, mutilating it, being “artistic” in killing it, not out of execution of an order as issued, but rather as an exhausting of the blind anger that fills his chest and mind.

He holds all the ugliness and all the beauty. Two faces of the same coin, aiming at manipulating all life and inertia.

Lina ran short of reassuring excuses that she was using to sooth her mind. She was torn by worries and fear of something bad happening to her husband on his way to her, since it was past 8.30 and he had not yet arrived. She had put on her makeup and her white dress and sat down to wait for him since more than two hours that felt like an endless eternity. And she was right to be worried and scared because something bad did happen to Fadi… and what a bad thing it is!

She was not aware of the huge disaster and tormenting storm that occurred.

She was not aware that all her dreams had gone away in a second and that all her happiness was destroyed in a blink.

Till the telephone rang, so she lifted the handset quickly and said impatiently:

-   Hello.

-   Good evening. It is the house of the “Majd’s”?

-   Yes, who is it?

-   I am the operator of the Coast Hospital, ma’am. Who is it on the phone?

-   I….. I am Mrs. Majd…. What … is … it?

-   Are you the wife of Mr. Fadi Majd, ma’am?

-   Yyy…..e.yessss.

-   Your husband is in the hospital following a car accident. He was brought in a short while ago, and his condition is very serious. Please come quickly.

-   Very….. serious…. Oh my God…..w…?

Lina had not finished her sentence but the operator had already hung up to make new calls with parents of sick and injured people, since the notification list was very long and full that night, and he had to finish it as soon as possible. It was out of question to extend the conversation with victims in general, or to comfort them. The messenger had to notify and that’s all. He will be excused, won’t he?

Lina ran out of the house lifting with the tip of her fingers the hem of her long white dress which was touching the floor, screaming in a choking, trembling voice:

-   Abou Samir, Abou Samir…. The key…. Where are you? The car key. Where are you? The key, the key…

The old man appeared from the back of the garage door running towards her, holding in his hand a cloth he was using to clean and wax one of the cars. He looked worried, and the weight of the years was slowing down his pace. He inquired:

-   What’s wrong, daughter?

-   The key, Abou Samir, come on… the key, hurry up.

-   What’s wrong, daughter? Please tell me. He said that with his hands in the pockets of his pants, searching for the key of the white coupé.

-   Abou Samir… your beloved Fadi… Oh my goodness, I cannot believe it.

-   What’s wrong with him, ma’am? Speak up, said Abou Samir while handing her the key.

-   An accident… an accident… and his condition is critical. God have mercy on us. God have mercy on us.

-   Accident… danger… Fadi? God, spare us! Spare us God!

The car took off like an arrow, escorted by the prayers of Abou Samir, and the tears on his cheeks, tears of a man who lived seventy years but maybe has not known a worse disaster so far. Indeed, Fadi is dearer to his heart than his own son Samir. There is no doubt about that, and it has always been this way.

Lina drove past the crushed car that the Civil defense officers had parked next to the rocks by the road side, without even noticing it. While still driving, she was wiping the tears that were running heavily off her eyes, sometimes with her right hand and some other times with her left hand. Her tears were almost heavier than the rain that the windscreen wipers were shutting away every now and then. She reached the hospital in no time and began running in the lobbies searching for the operation and reanimation rooms where Fadi was. The sound of her steps in the evening high heels gave to everyone who heard them a good hint about the race between her and time.

She crossed the big long hall and reached the big double-door. She dashed towards it and tried to open it… but it was locked. She knocked … no answer.

She tried once… twice… thrice with insistently and nervously… no answer…

She turned to go back to the information desk because she thought she was mistaken about the road, or room, or both. It was then that she saw a man, all dressed in white from tip to toe, bringing in a stretcher with a few bed sheets carefully folded. She ran to him before he got to her.

-   Sir, she asked, is the reanimation and operation rooms behind this door?

-   Yes, ma’am.

-   Is the man who…. being treated behind it?

-   Hmm, the man whose car was hit by the truck?

-   A truck?!

-   Yes, poor guy. He’s devastated. But who are you?

-   Who am I? I am the poor, disaster-stricken wife.

She said that and was sometimes hitting her cheeks with her palms and some other times pulling her hair nervously, before she crashed on one of the seats that were lined up on the two sides of the lobby.

-   I am sorry, ma’am.

-   Are you going into the OR now?

-   Yes.

-   I knocked and they did not open.

-   Didn’t you ring?

-   Ring? Which bell?

-   The one near the door, on the left wall.

-   I didn’t see it, I didn’t see it.

-   Anyway, you cannot enter, he said while ringing the bell.

-   Please, let me enter with you to see him, be it for one minute.

-   Impossible, madam, impossible.

-   Please…

-   Madam… It is strictly forbidden, and I do not advise you to enter even if you find your way in. His condition is beyond your capacity to handle. But rest assured, the doctors taking care of him are some of the best doctors in the country, and they wouldn’t spare an effort to save him.

-   Oh my God.

-   One of the door sides opened and the nurse entered with his empty stretcher, without letting Lina go in with him. She crashed on one of the seats in tears, and the sound of her weeping was echoed by the walls of that big empty hall, and mixed with screaming sounds from distant rooms crowded with patients weary from pain and sorrow.

She sat lonely on that seat for two hours. Nurses out, doctors in, doctors out, nurses in, doctors and nurses out, doctors and nurses in… but NO ANSWERS!

-   Will he survive?

-   We do not know.

-   Will he die?

-   It is in God’s hands.

-   What do you think, nurse, will he make it? Nurse… nurse...

-   Poor guy, she mumbled while she was pacing away from her.

-   In God’s name I ask you doctor, is there a slight hope for him?

-   I cannot promise you anything, madam; his condition is difficult, difficult.

Coming in and out, out and in. Dull faces, sullen faces, pale faces, fade faces. But no promising faces.

Only a few laughing faces for a joke shared on the way in or out. Those were the faces of people to whom the sight of blood has become a tradition and that of torn bodies a routine.

Their hearts have become of iron, their feelings of rock and their emotions of cement.

Fadi was hanging between life and death, in a coma state that lasted six full weeks, during which the medical views and reports were contradictory.

Once awake, he underwent many surgeries, and his stay in the hospital lasted eight full months: eight months of suffering, pain and worry for him, for the ones around him, and especially for his wife who never left him, and who was receiving daily a report after another, a diagnosis after another, all exempt of any bright insight or distant hope, except the promise that Fadi would live! But how is he going to live? That was the big question.

He went back home with his wife but he was the shadow of the man he once was, with the remainder of the health and youth he enjoyed till an early past. He came with a report, stating the final conclusion and an accurate description of his condition:

Negative points:

1-     Partial brain damage!

2-     Crashed spinal column!

3-     Dead nervous system!

Positive points:

1-     Vision: sound!

2-     Hearing: sound!

3-     Sense of smell: sound!

4-     Sense of taste: sound!

5-     Brain: sound!

6-     Internal organs: sound!

Results:

-   Paralysis of the whole body.

-   Speech: incomprehensible rattling.
